Guidelines for geographical distance
In the banking world, for example, there are guidelines for the required geographical distance between a primary and secondary external data centre. A distance of at least 30 km is recommended. Latency, i.e. the time it takes for data to get to its destination across the network, is another important factor that should be taken into consideration if you plan to make use of two data centres. The enormous exchange of data between both data centres will also increase the cost. So it’s important to find the appropriate balance between security and budget.
